Dec/1
Man...it's so long ago...I don't really remember what went on that day...lucky for you guys I guess, less reading! But I will try to retrieve the information from the back of my mind.
After breakfast (Acadian crepes by Emilie), we drove to the local high school (Eckat High) to learn how to make bread. It's around a 15 minute walk, but I think because we were running late and we don't really know the way around town we chose to drive instead. Just so you guys know, making homemade bread is one of the things every single Katimavik member do throughout the history of Katimavik...one of the unknown things that define Katimavik, wouldn't you say Knox?
Anyways we got to school, and it's kind of weird going back into the hallways of high school...but what unnerves us the most is the bell...we all jumped when the school bell rang. The kids all just stare at us like aliens because we were new to the school, and we were sent to the breakfast club (a home-ec room with stoves and ingredients, and also where kids can pick up breakfast things to eat - although I don't see how Cheerio squares is considered "breakfast" though) to learn how to make bread. There were three ladies there who taught us how to make bread, plus other things. We learnt how to make bread loaves (both white and whole wheat), plus dinner rolls/buns, cinnamon rolls, and tortillas. It was fun, and because I was good at kneading the dough people pretty much just designated me as the breadmaker of the house (which is not going to happen, too bad for them). After approximately 2.5 hours we walked away with platters of fresh bread/rolls/cinnamon buns/tortillas/donated bakingware because we have nothing...into the hallways full of jealous and hungry looking kids and back to the katima-truck (Maxime dubbed it the "co-co mobile"...don't know where she got that from) for lunch.
After lunch I was hoping for some free time, because it was really cold outside (there was a warning for a snowstorm previously in the morning) but no...Emilie always have some ideas at the back of her mind. This time, she wants us to do a scavenger-hunt of Blind River, and she even had worksheets made with questions and groups made up. My group consists of Cynthia and Cheryl, and we had to answer questions such as "Who is working in Subway right now" and "Grab a brochure on recycling in the town hall" (Oh yes, she also had questions in French too, tricky girl). Normally I would be up for it but because it started snowing when lunch was over (and I am not talking about soft flakes onto the ground winterwonderland kind of thing...it's similar to the desert storms in the Sahara where the snow is just blown back and forth like sand...scary stuff), I didn't want to go out. I was like "Are you sure we should go out? It looks pretty unsafe out there", to which pretty much everyone in the house made fun of me for coming from Vancouver and knowing nothing about the winter, haha. Yes I admit, I am a West Coast wuss.
So after some hesitation from me, everyone braved the snowstorm outside. Man, was it ever windy! Snow just kept slapping across our faces and we kept going into store trying to hide from it. Emilie's scavenger hunt had us going into different directions of the town so by the end we were all pretty tired and beaten. However, the other 2 groups I guess were smarter because in the middle of the hunt they just decided to go to the town hall and ask the lady behind for all the answers and went home right after...therefore many of them went out to play in the snow afterwards. Our group just did the questions the classic way (what a bunch of idiots) but I guess preservance paid off because apparently we were the only group that got the questions right and we won a bar of Toblerone (big whoop)!!!! When we return home (almost an hour after the other 2 groups) they invited me to go out and play in the snow with them/tobogganing to which I said "No way man, you guys are crrrrraaaaazzzzy". But yeah, I really should learn how to enjoy snow if I want friends in the end.
Dinner/Free time?/Bed...Mass-O next day
More to go guys...stay with me here...
